The Role of Character Strengths in Overcoming Adversity

Dr. Michael Matthews of Westpoint military academy will be talking to us about 'The Role of Character Strengths in Overcoming Trauma and Adversity'.

Dr. Michael D. Matthews is currently Professor of Engineering Psychology at the United States Military Academy. He is a former Air Force officer with tours of duty at the U.S. Air Force Human Resources Laboratory and as a faculty member at the U.S. Air Force Academy and taught at Drury University. Dr. Matthews was selected as a Templeton Foundation Positive Psychology Fellow and much of his research focuses on applying Positive Psychology principles to military contexts. He is on the Science Advisory Board for the Military Child Education Coalition and served as President of the American Psychological Association’s Division of Military Psychology from 2007 to 2008. Collectively, his research interests center on character and human performance in combat and other dangerous contexts.

 

The Role of Resilience in Older Adults Living with HIV/AIDS

Dr Kristen Krause of Rutgers School of Public Health will be talking to us about 'The Role of Resilience in Older Adults Living with HIV/AIDS'.
Dr Krause is an adjunct faculty member at the Rutgers University School of Public Health (SPH) and the Deputy Director of the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior and Prevention Studies (CHIBPS), a leading training ground for LGBTQ scholars. Her expertise is in HIV/AIDS, aging, resilience, and broader LGBTQ health disparities. More specifically, her work examines resilience as it relates to biological, psychological, and social health states among older gay HIV+ men.

The Emerging Science of Dose for Trauma & Resilience

Dr. Sherry Hamby will be talking to us about "The Emerging Science of Dose for Trauma & Resilience.".
Dr Sherry Hamby will be talking to us about "The Emerging Science of Dose for Trauma & Resilience.", being held on Zoom. Dr Hamby is Research Professor of Psychology and Director of the Life Paths Research Program at the University of the South. She is also founding editor of the American Psychological Association journal Psychology of Violence, which has a top 10 ranking in Family Studies and Criminology, based on Impact Factor.

Why Acute Stress Can Improve Social and Psychological Functioning

Dr. Anthony Mancini will be talking to us about "Psychosocial Gains from Adversity: Why Acute Stress Can Improve Social and Psychological Functioning.".
Anthony Mancini is a clinical psychologist who studies a variety of potentially traumatic events, including interpersonal loss, military deployment, mass trauma, traumatic injury, and life-threatening illness. He also examines the ways acute adversity stimulates social behavior, increases trust and cooperation at a group level, and can, under some conditions, directly improve psychological functioning.

Aligning Resilience to Support Our Needs

Dr. Jenny Liu will be talking to us about "Aligning resilience to support our needs".

Dr. Jenny Liu is a Postdoctoral Associate with the MacDonald Franklin OSI Research Centre and an Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Schulich School of Medicine, Western University. She also holds appointments with the Toronto Western Hospital-Krembil Research Institute, and the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, Ryerson University. Dr. Liu is an elected board member of the Society for the Study of Psychiatry and Culture, an international organization devoted to fostering cultural aspects of mental health and illness. Dr. Liu’s background is in psychological science, and her scholarship activities bridge research in stress and resilience with community-based applications. In her work, Dr. Liu explores the intersecting biophysiological, psychological, and socio-cultural determinants of health and resilience using mixed methods approaches and quantitative modelling.

A relational perspective on lived experience of recovery from substance misuse

Dr. Rebecca Graber will be talking to us about "Resilience for recovery - a relational perspective on lived experience of recovery from substance misuse."

Dr Graber's work centres on how peer relationships can contribute to the development of psychological resilience in the face of complex challenges to mental health and wellbeing, with a particular orientation to lived experience. Her research aims to identify, understand and promote the contributions of informal social relationships and practices, especially as these arise in resistance to or as consequence of broad social risks (such as austerity, poverty, stigma, discrimination, colonial legacy, and prevalence of harmful substances).

Promoting resilience through blogging

Dennis Relojo-Howell will be speaking on the topic 'Promoting resilience through blogging: Basis for a blog-based mental health intervention for adolescents in low- and middle-income countries'.

Dennis is a PhD student at the university of Edinburgh. His research interests encompass three clusters: blog psychology, digital mental health, and psychological resilience. A list of his published works is available on his Google Scholar profile.

Dennis is also the founder and managing director of Psychreg: a digital spaces to promote positive mental health
